Shindig on the Green is one of Asheville's finest traditions, celebrating the musical heritage and mountain culture of Western North Carolina throughout the summer. This year promises to be especially exciting as the Shindig enjoys its 40th year! This year's mountain tradition is going to feature an exhilarating mix of Big Circle Mountain Dancers, Clog Dancers, Bluegrass and Old Time String Bands, Ballad Singers, Storytellers and of course the strong sense of community and family that has kept mountain culture strong for so many years. With a main stage show as well as informal jam sessions, there's something for everyone at Shindig on the Green- the fun starts "along about sundown" (about 7pm) on select dates this summer.

The Shindig on the Green began entertaining the Asheville community in 1966, but it can trace its origins back further to the advent of its parent festival, The Mountain Folk and Dance Festival, in 1928. The Mountain Folk and Dance Festival was founded by Bascom Lamar Lunsford in an attempt to spread the beauty and dignity of Southern Appalachian music and dance traditions. Since its inception, The Mountain Folk and Dance Festival has played a fundamental role in preserving and sharing those traditions with the world. It was out of this fine tradition that Shindig on the Green was formed to not only create another venue, but also to encourage public participation in folk music and dance. Since then, the Shindig has been a resounding success and The Mountain Folk and Dance Festival has gone on to be the oldest festival of its kind in the nation.
